Roid Rage

Erik is still is ICU.  He is also on some powerful steroids.  I now understand the meaning of roid rage.  He is, let's say, just a little bit feisty.  It's actually sort of entertaining.

When I walked in yesterday he was freaking out.  This part isn't entertaining it's actually a little bit sad….but he kept asking about John all night and of course no one is allowed to tell him about the medical condition of another patient.  He was very upset and concerned that John was not ok and no one was telling him.

Erik's steroidal infused version:  There is  a conspiracy theory taking place in the hospital among the nursing staff.  They keep telling him they will find out about John but they are lying.  Everyone is lying.  If they would have just explained that they are precluded from telling him about another patient, or that they had no access or any way to get information about John, then he would have understood.

Nice calm nurse version:  We told him repeatedly that we are precluded from telling him about another patient and also that we don't even have access to any information that would allow us to see how John is doing.

I'm going to go ahead and believe the nurses on this one.  And today I'm taking them cupcakes.

I was able to assure Erik that John was just fine.  Laura sent me pictures of John from his room.  John was also freaking out about Erik since he was still in ICU so I had to send a smiling thumbs up picture of Erik.  Everyone was calm and peaceful after that.

Now let me say this.  It was cute.  They were so concerned about each other.  Truly concerned about their friend.  Now.  Laura and I have agreed that the cuteness is wearing off quickly and we are wondering if they are going to be all 5th grade obsessive BFF acting for the rest of their lives.  That will be annoying to us.  We decided we need to get matching tattoos or take a cruise together or something so they can't act like they are better friends than we are.  I'm only sort of kidding.

Last night Erik called me from the ICU.  He said "hey, I have two really important things to say"….

1.  Make sure Jack changes our fantasy football picks before the game
2.  Make sure you tell John that I am fine, I am only still in ICU because people are slow

As I was typing this up he just called me again.  Still feisty.

1.  They said they are moving me to a room this morning.  They better do it.
2.  They said when they move me I can see John.  They better move me and let me see John.
3.  It is too loud in here.  They better move me to a place that is not loud.
4.  I'm going to eat my liquid breakfast.  They told me I could have an omelet but they lied.  They better move me to a room where I can have an omelet.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I plan to become the face of a brand new campaign to support and encourage spousal sedation.

Erik's ICU stay was extended while they tried to find the right balance for his blood sugar.  The steroids were throwing it out of whack.  We can only hope they wean him off soon.  He has not slept since he got out of surgery.  He has not slept since Wednesday night.  They told Erik he had to stay in the hospital for 4-6 days.  I'm assuming he will get out on Monday.  He advised his nurse that he is counting his no sleeping time as extra days because the ICU is too loud.  Lovely.

John is doing well.  He is in the VIP suite which is probably why Erik is dying to get over there.  Luckily John is not on steroids and has been sleeping soundly for two days.  He should go home on Saturday.

Laura and I decided that the first time they get to see each other we want to record it.  We also want them to move towards each other in slow motion with arms outstretched and an air supply song playing in the background.  While wearing their matching pajamas.
