So I know the big question on everyone's mind this morning is "How did Amy sleep, what with all the mismatched furniture and unsightly medical equipment and the whole side of the bed switching drama?"
I slept just fine. Perfectly actually. I was nervous that something would wake me up at 3 a.m. When that happens it's all over, I'm up for the day. I think it's a getting older thing. I think it's a my grandma thing. I slept my usual 12-5:30 and that was good enough for me.
Erik, on the other hand, was apparently up a few times. I guess it's tough to be tied to a machine all night especially after being told that shifts in position or roll overs onto the tube could result in a beeping machine. And a healthy fear that your wife would wake up and everyone's night would be ruined can probably cause some anxiety.
He followed all the rules (which is not too difficult of a feat considering they are in a flip chart in my bedroom) appropriately used his anti bacterial soap and less than flattering face mask, and pushed all the right buttons on the machine at the right time. He has to weigh himself every night and every morning. Last night the dialysis sucked 15 pounds of water weight out of his body. Not a bad deal because really what's a little open abdominal wound in exchange for that type of crash diet.
And because I am a silver lining type of girl I will say this: When your husband is tethered to a machine and pretty much has to sleep on his back there is no snoring. None. Something to consider for those of you who are interested in stopping this type of sleep disrupting behavior of those around you.
I'm a little sad that now we just have a routine in our own house with little chance of anything funny or entertaining happening, unlike when I was thrust out into the world of the dialysis clinic and patient appreciation dinners. I'll have to start hanging out at the grocery store again, because I always come home with a good tale from that experience. It usually starts with me secretly counting the items in the carts of people standing in the express lane and goes downhill from there.
